Four remand prisoners including a Nigerian lady have been discharged as Joy News documentary on Ghana’s remand crisis continues to get results.
The Nigerian lady Grace Moses Adejor was remanded after being charged with illegal transportation of narcotics in October 2013.
She was however discharged after hearing by the judges of the Justice For All Programme, Friday at the Ho prisons.
She walked out of prison lifted up her hands and beamed as the implications of her discharge sank in.
Grace and the three other male remand prisoners were released under the Justice for All Programme which is touring prisons across the country to hear cases of persons remanded and victimized by Ghana’s slow justice delivery system.
It was Joy News’ Seth Kwame Boateng whose documentary sparked a dramatic response from the Chief Justice Georgina Wood.
She then ordered the reintroduction of the Justice for All Programme to attempt to decongest over-flowing prisons.
A total of 23 remand prisoners have been set free from the Nsawam prisons in the Eastern region in March. 18 were also freed in Koforidua also in the Eastern region.
The prisoners, some of whom had been in custody for over nine years, were unconditionally discharged after hearings involving six courts and six judges within the premises of the Nsawam prisons.
In the Tamale Central prison in the Northern region, 10 remand prisoners facing murder charges and conspiracy to commit murder were granted partial freedom.

One of the inmates, Alidu Bukari, has been on remand for eight years on suspicion of murdering his own daughter. He was granted bail on the sum of 500 cedis and two sureties.
Prisons Service PRO Vitalis Aryeh has described as “a big relief” the summary release of remand prisoners following an eye-opening documentary.
