By some freak of fate, a 67-year-old woman met her death when she was knocked down by a car driven by a lunatic.
This happened at Ofankor, near Accra, when the lunatic entered a taxi cab parked by the road side with the ignition key on, and drove it into a bridge near the Ofankor Old-Barrier, knocking down the woman.
The lunatic, identified as Gyamenah, was said to have escaped from a prayer camp at Taifa. He has been taken to the Accra Psychiatric Hospital by the police, while the taxi driver has been arraigned before court and remanded in custody until October 3.
The driver, Kwame Atta, 26 was said to have parked his vehicle to look for passengers and left the engine running.
The Crime Officer of Achimota Mile 7 District Police, ASP Henry Agbeve, who briefed the Times yesterday, said while the driver was busy looking for passengers in the afternoon of last Monday, the lunatic entered the car and drove it into the bridge, hitting the woman in the process.
He said the woman, identified as Ruth Asihenyo, had arrived from Kibi in the Eastern Region to visit her daughter in Accra.
She fell unconscious and was rushed to the Amasaman Hospital where she died. The body has been deposited at the Nsawam Government Hospital mortuary for autopsy.
