An Accra Circuit Court has granted bail to all 20 persons arrested last week for alleged assault and destruction of school property during a riot at Madina. Each posted 8,000 cedis with two sureties. However, the prosecutor DSP Kofi Blagogee increased their charges from six to 11.Joy News’ Cyrus deGraft-Johnson who was in court on Monday reported that the 20 suspects are facing charges including conspiracy to commit crime, unlawful assembly, causing damage and assaulting public officers. They were arrested during a clash with police who tried to stop them from riotous acts in protest of the sale of a parcel of land to the Faith Community Baptist School. In the brawl, cars, including two belonging to the police were damaged. Two officers were also injured.According to deGraft-Johnson, a huge crowd of sympathizers besieged the court premises in the early hours of the day but had to leave when the court announced it was adjourning the case to June 14th.Meanwhile the lead counsel for the accused persons, George Asomanyi prayed the court to grant his clients bail as they were ready to satisfy the bail conditions. He also accused the media of unnecessarily hyping the case but was hopeful the court will later find out that the suspects were innocent bystanders caught in the brawl.Lawyer Asomanyi intimated that the police only arrested the 20 persons as a face-saving move, stressing that many of the suspects needed medical attention as a result of injures they sustained during the arrest.Meanwhile, the Assistant Pastor of the Faith Community Baptist Church, Rev Joseph Oduro Yeboah is hopeful the case will be speedily dealt with.Authorities of the school are also demanding 26,000 Ghana cedis as payment for damages caused by the irate youth.Source: Joy News/Ghana
