General Secretary of the National Democratic Party (NDP) has accused certain factions within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) whom he says spearheaded a barrage of attacks against former President Jerry John Rawlings.
Mohammed Frimpong indicated that the commitment demonstrated by some of these individuals to participate in the burial arrangement of the late statesman smacks of hypocrisy.
"Suddenly, the individuals under the NDC who publicly vilified President Rawlings have rediscovered a new voice proclaiming themselves as the true adherers of his ideals.
"Those who publicly described JJ as used unpleasant words such as a barking dog are now hailing him. Why?" he quizzed at a press conference in Accra, Monday.
According to him, the flagbearer for the NDC, John Mahama played various roles in the venture.
"John Mahama during the NDC's unity walk in Ho in the Volta Region in 2018 was on record to have labelled J.J. Rawlings as a Volta god who did not deserve to be worshipped by Voltarians," he said on November 23.
The leadership of the NDC has demanded full participation in the pre-burial and burial arrangement of the late founder.
As part of these measures to honour him, the party has already undertaken a vigil in Accra and a walk in Ho among other activities to symbolise the values of Rawlings’ legacy.
But Alhaji Frimpong will have none of that.
The General Secretary said the NDC's campaign is losing steam for which reason the party sees the development as a window to exploit in galvanising the electorate for their cause.
“Now that J.J. is not more, John Mahama finds it expedient to utilise his death to galvanise support for his weakening base within the party’s rank and file and the country at large to salvage his 2020 campaign which is going nowhere,” he added.
He also noted that individuals such as Prof Kwamena Ahwoi, through his book Working With Rawlings, sought to downgrade the strides made by the late former President in his work as a proponent for democracy in the country's fourth Republic.
The NDP also used the opportunity to debunk assertions that its flagbearer, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings had pulled out of the 2020 Presidential race.
Former President Rawlings died on November 12 after a short illness at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
