Despite a court order that the mentally ill man who carried a gun to President John Mahama's church should be sent to Accra Psychiatric Hospital, Charles Antwi is still in the custody of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI)
His lawyer Francis Xavier Sosu says “there is no sufficient security arrangement” at the hospital for the 36-year-old man. He says the hospital does not have the “extra rooms” for his client.
Francis Xavier Sosu also revealed that his client is still a national security threat.
“He has not regretted ever saying he wants to kill the president.
“He still believes that one day he can become president and he can only become president after he has killed the president,” the lawyer told Joy News.
Mr. Antwi was jailed 10 years by a circuit court for illegal possession of a weapon, ostensibly to shoot the President.
He was summarily sentenced on his first appearance in court. The ruling sparked public discontent with many believing the man showed signs of mental illness.
It is believed that the judge erred in the high-handedness of the sentence and the speed of the trial. Charles Antwi also had no lawyer in court.
A High Court overturned that ruling and directed that Charles be confined to a mental facility.
The Attorney-General later withdrew the case against him following a psychiatric evaluation that revealed he needed treatment for mental illness.
Charles Antwi has been in BNI custody following the quashing of his sentence.
Francis Xavier Sosu is confident that in BNI custody, Charles Antwi will get the “best” treatment.
