A leader of the People’s National Convention, Dr. Somtim Torbega, has hit back at the party’s flagbearer in the 2008 General Election accusing him of fathering a baby outside wedlock.
Edward Mahama in an interview with Joy FM suggested that Torbiga had embezzled an amount of GHS 30,000 meant for the party’s constitution review.
He alleged Dr. Somtim Torbiga failed to present any report to the party and rather spent the money on kyikyinga (kebab) with his girl friend at a hotel.
Torbiga had threatened to scuttle Mahama’s fourth time presidential bid on the ticket of the PNC.
In an interview with Joy News’ Dzifa Bampoh, Torbiga vehemently dismissed the allegations against him, saying he never misappropriated any money with his girl friend.
He explained the money was used in paying hotel bills the party had rented for the committee members tasked to review the constitution, adding, the accountant duly accounted for the money.
He said he never stayed in the hotel with a lady, alleging, that the lady in question is rather the concubine of Dr. Edward Mahama who got pregnant for him.
“I never stayed with any girl there. I will repeat. I never stayed with any girl there; much less buy kebab. The one who stayed there is one Janet who is Dr. Mahama’s concubine. She has a baby with him now,” he snapped.
He said his committee could not complete the report because it run short of money.
He vowed he will oppose any decision by Mahama to bid for the party’s flagbearer for the fourth time.
Quoting explicitly Article 49 (1) and (2) of the PNC constitution, Torbiga said: (1)“There shall be the national leader of the party who shall be the overall head and chief spokesman. He or she shall be the presidential candidate.
"(2) He shall hold office for a term of not less than the life of Parliament and shall be eligible for re-election for another term.”
He argued Dr. Mahama will be violating the party’s constitution if he should contest for the presidency for the fourth time.
He said instead of conducting constituency elections to elect executives who will subsequently elect national executives and flagbearer for the party, all that Mahama does is to pick people from the streets and cronies to elect him as flagbearer.
That will not happen this time, he warned
