President John Mahama is ready to line up 4,800 witnesses in a case in which his presidency is being challenged at the Supreme Court by Ghana’s opposition party members.
This is contained in an answer to an election petition filed by three top members of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Akufo-Addo Addo who was the party’s flagbearer in the 2012 election, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, vice presidential candidate and the party’s flagbearer Jake Obetsebi Lamptey.
The petitioners claim over 1.3 million votes were illegally counted in last month’s elections and are seeking the court to strike out those votes.
The incumbent president John Mahama is the first respondent in the suit with the Electoral Commission being the second.
The first respondent, as the second, has denied the claims by the petitioners.
Counsel to the President Tony Lithur, in the petition said “The whole petition lacks merit and should be dismissed.”
He stated further in the petition that the first respondent intends to call 4,800 as witnesses.
Speaking to Joy News’ Francis Abban, a member of the legal team of the NDC which is seeking to join the suit, Victor Kojogah Adawudu said the president is “ready to prove to the whole world that the election results were credible.”
He said the president is entitled to bring to court all players in last month’s election, right from the polling stations to the collation centres and the election strong room, all in an effort to show that the results as declared by the second respondent are nothing but the reality of votes cast.
