The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Mahama, has raised alarms over the disruption of peace under the New Patriotic Party (NPP), particularly in light of the recent resurgence of chieftaincy clashes in Bawku.
The longstanding conflict, which has plagued the region for years, has escalated with the return of rival chief Alhaji Seidu Abagre from exile, leading to the tragic loss of at least two lives and several injuries.
During a campaign event in Saboba on Monday, October 28, Mahama addressed his supporters, calling for calm and restraint among all parties involved in the ongoing disputes.
He emphasised that violence and provocation would only exacerbate the situation and hinder efforts to restore order.
His comments come as tensions in Bawku have intensified, prompting concerns about the safety and security of residents in the area.
Mahama stressed the critical need for dialogue as a means to resolve the chieftaincy conflict, underscoring that peaceful communication is essential for finding lasting solutions.
He reiterated that understanding among the various factions is vital to moving forward and achieving harmony in Bawku.
Pledging his commitment to restoring peace, Mahama stated that if elected in the upcoming elections, he would prioritise initiatives aimed at uniting the divided communities in Bawku.
“Without peace, there cannot be progress, unfortunately, any time the peace of Ghana will be disturbed, it is the NPP government that is in power. Recently, I have been hearing some things happening in Bawku that appear to be threatening to disturb the peace there."
“I will just appeal to the people of Bawku area and all those who are stakeholders in what is happening there to exercise patience and exercise restraint. We know that some sinister hands are trying to stoke the fires of ethnic conflict."
“They should not allow themselves to be provoked into violence. And so, please the people of the Bawku area, I’m begging you, pleading with you to remain calm, be restrained, and don’t resort to conflict. NDC is coming and when we come, we will make sure that there’s peace in Bawku and surrounding areas," he vowed.
