The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has rejected suggestions that he is dissatisfied with his posting to the Education Ministry, describing his appointment as a purposeful move by President John Dramani Mahama to drive far-reaching reforms in the sector.
Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV on Wednesday, December 24, Mr Iddrisu said the President’s decision followed extensive consultations and was informed by the urgent need to overhaul Ghana’s education system, which continues to face persistent structural challenges.
He stressed that the education sector requires bold and decisive leadership, noting that difficulties span the entire learning chain, from early childhood education through to secondary schooling.
According to him, these challenges must be addressed directly if meaningful progress is to be made.
Mr Iddrisu indicated that the President’s confidence in his abilities was based on his experience and track record in public service, adding that he remains committed to justifying that confidence through results.
He further revealed that the government intends to undertake a comprehensive review of the education system to ensure that it aligns with contemporary global standards and produces graduates who are relevant to the demands of the modern economy.
The Education Minister explained that the reforms will prioritise the development of critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving skills, rather than an overreliance on rote learning, to better prepare learners to contribute effectively to national development and compete on the global stage.
