A new fashion designer Abena Sekyiamah, 22, is poised to bring a new breath of fresh air into the Ghanaian fashion industry through the use of Ghanaian fabrics and a touch of creativity in her works. The new clothing line, MAKSI Clothing was out-doored with a very colorful fashion show at The African Regent Hotel pool side in Accra last Friday.20 models cat-walked in MAKSI designs produced with Ghana Textile Prints (GTP) amidst stage craft performances. There were exciting performances from D.K. Osei and Mercy who did the Spoken Word, Ras Bomba, Guitarist, and a Salsa dance by Josh and Chanelle.MAKSI Clothing is a joint partnership between two sisters, Abena Sekyiamah and Nana Darkoa Sekyiamah. They hoped to establish an online store to market their products and also host similar shows in Addis Ababa, Ethopia and London later to outdoor their designs to the international community.Nana Darkoa Sekyiamah, Head of Business Development at MAKSI Clothing in an interview with Myjoyonline.com said Ghanaians are ready for their new clothing line. Although she wants to go international with her designs, she said Ghana still remains her primary target. With the ever changing face of globalisation, Nana Dakoa said her outfit is ready to produce cloths that are multi-purpose and also fuse in with global trends.“We live in a global world so our influences are global. If we see something really nice that originates from North Africa, there is no reason why we can’t add our own signature to that and make it a special MAKSI design.”To her, the biggest challenge in the industry is quality control, “as a fashion house we have a team of tailors and seamstresses sewing for you. One of the things we haven’t really perfected in Ghana is the importance of finishing. People make the cloths look nice on the outside but the inside is not as unique so the inside has to also be unique as the outside.”The duo will later open a store to sell the cloths.Story by Aglanu Dela Ernest/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
