A young man in his early 20s has allegedly committed suicide in Akame Nyekornakpoe, a community in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region.
The deceased, identified as Prince Tengey, was found hanging in his room during the early hours of Wednesday, June 11, 2025.
Mr. Tengey, who was deaf and dumb, worked as a coconut seller in the community.
According to eyewitnesses, he was discovered by a friend who had come to call him for work. Residents said he appeared to be in good spirits the previous evening, with no visible signs of distress.
Preliminary reports indicated that Mr. Tengey had recently been entangled in a legal matter. He was reportedly arrested and detained for nearly a month over allegations of sexual assault.
The case is still ongoing in court, and he was scheduled to appear before the court on Tuesday, June 10, but failed to do so.
Some community members alleged that he had received a warning from the police that failure to attend court or report to the station could lead to his re-arrest.
“We suspected that the emotional strain from the legal proceedings may have played a role in his death.”
Mr. Wilfred Dakunya, the Assembly Member for the area, confirmed the incident to the Ghana News Agency.
He stated that stringent measures would be taken in collaboration with relevant stakeholders to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Mr. Dakunya urged residents to avoid resorting to suicide in times of distress and instead seek help from community leaders, counselors, and other available support systems.
“We must support one another and talk about our problems. Taking your own life is never the solution,” he advised.
Efforts by the GNA to speak with the family of the deceased were unsuccessful, as his parents, visibly distressed, declined to comment.
The body has since been deposited at the Ketu South Municipal Hospital morgue for autopsy as investigations continue.
