The Techiman Police has arrested a 20-year old unemployed man for raping a 74- year-old woman in a bush at Maampehia near Techiman.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Christopher Tawiah, Brong -Ahafo Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) told the Ghana News Agency on Friday in Sunyani, that the suspect Yaw Amos escaped from the town after committing the crime.
ASP Tawiah said on July, 18, 2013 Amos entered the farm of Madam Mary Kissiwa and sexually assaulted her and fled after the act to an unknown destination.
He said the woman reported the matter to the Police but all efforts to arrest him proved futile until January this year, when he was sent to the Police Station on a charge of stealing.
ASP Tawiah said on January 9, this year Amos went to some body’s farm to steal tubers of yam and cassava where he was caught and handed over to the Techiman Police.
He said police officers identified Amos to be the one on Police wanted list and therefore invited the old woman who came to identify the suspect as the one who raped her.
ASP Tawiah stated that Amos admitted the offence and was remanded into Police custody to assist in investigations.
