A 41-year-old man, Ben Bella Ahaligah, has been arrested by the Ho Police for selling large quantities of CFL energy saving bulbs earmarked for free distribution to promote the national energy efficiency project. The CFL bulbs were imported by the government to replace energy inefficient incandescent bulbs in the country free of charge. However, Ben Ahaligah was alleged to be selling the bulbs at GH¢3 each at his residence at Abutia-Kloe, near Ho.According to a police source, Ahaligah had used indelible ink to erase the "Property of the Government of Ghana. Not for Sale" inscription on the box and had also succeeded in scraping the same writings on the bulb itself. The source said the police had been hinted that the suspect was indulging in the act and, therefore, sent a policeman dressed in mufti to purchase a quantity of the bulbs. After the purchase, the police moved in, arrested him and took him to his house where they found several boxes of the bulbs in his bedroom and other accomplices, mostly children, using ink to rub out the inscriptions on the boxes and scraping the writings off the bulbs.
Upon interrogation, the source said, it also came out that Ahaligah had another shop and house at Aflao, where it was believed he was also selling the bulbs.Consequently, a message was relayed to the relevant security agencies in Aflao who went to this residence and found all undisclosed quantity of the bulbs. The police said he would soon be arraigned before court, adding that they were still investigating how he came by that large quantity of bulbs and that anyone who might have aided him would be arrested and prosecuted.Source: Daily Graphic
