A Midwife at the Pantang Hospital, Princeler Frimpong Koduah has advised pregnant women to monitor their weight carefully, as excessive weight gain can increase the risk of developing gestational diabetes—a condition that occurs during pregnancy and can pose significant risks if not addressed promptly.
According to her, gestational diabetes is influenced by factors such as family history and obesity, and while it is often linked to hormonal changes during pregnancy, it usually resolves after childbirth.
Healthcare professionals recommend that women planning to become pregnant schedule regular check-ups to monitor their health and mitigate risks.
Treatment for gestational diabetes is tailored to each individual's needs.
Nutritionist at the Ghana Infectious Disease Centre, Samuel Success also encouraged pregnant women to engage in moderate exercises and maintain a balanced diet.
The goal is to manage the condition without causing undue fatigue or dehydration, and also to support overall well-being and manage blood sugar levels effectively.
