The Electricity Company of Ghana is unable to carry out a major exercise to install prepaid meters at all government establishments. The migration is aimed at forcing the agencies to be more responsible in their use of electricity. The government buildings at the moment use credit meters which literally guarantees them unlimited supply of electricity as the ECG is hardly able to cut them off when their bills accumulate.Joy Business has learnt the migration to prepaid meters could not take place because the special meters required for the exercise are yet to be secured. The project is also expected to help the ECG recover the huge amounts owed by most Ministries, Departments and Agencies and is in response to a directive by the Vice-President in April asking the company to take all appropriate measures to curtail the abuse of electricity by MDAs.A number of ministries and senior high schools have already been fitted with prepaid meters in an original project by the ECG some two years ago.Source: Joy Business/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
