The Executive Director of the Centre for African Elections Media Monitoring Index, Dr. Messan Mawugbe has accused the National Media Commission of being selective in its attempt to sanction media houses that allow their platforms to be used to incite violence ahead of the Supreme Court judgement. The NMC issued a stern warning on Tuesday August 6, at a joint news conference with the National Communications Authority (NCA) that, it will deal with media houses who use inflammatory language ahead of the Supreme Court ruling. However, Dr. Messan Mawugbe believes media houses cannot be solely responsible for such unguarded comments. He said if that fact was not factored into efforts to keep the airwaves clean, it could lead to gagging of the media in Ghana.According to him, the media institutions cannot tell exactly at what point someone would be "dropping" an abusive comment."What we need to do is rather to encourage the media to cut out those inciteful tendencies should they be made," he said.He stressed that to hold the media responsible for comments they have no control over was wrong.
