The National Media Commission has lashed out at instances of pornographic publications in the Ghanaian media and warned of dire consequencies. Chairman of the Commission, Kabral Blay Amihere told Joy FM’s Super Morning Show host Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah on Tuesday that the society might be forced to curtail the liberties of the media if the sorry state of reportage continues. “When you drive society to a point, they will roll back your liberties,” he said, adding “that should never happen in the new Ghana”. His comments follow a series of complaints the commission has received from the public in respect of pornographic publications. A statement issued by the Commission said at least three newspapers - Newsone, Daily Guide and the P&P - published pictures that could best be described as complete pornography. The publications, the statement added hurt the sensibilities of the readers. Mr Amihere said the liberal state of the Ghanaian media landscape requires media practitioners to be more responsible in their reportage. He said pornography was used as justification for the promulgation of the Newspaper Licensing Law in 1979 and warned practitioners to be “circumspect in their coverage of sex and love”, or risk having their law re-introduced. He said the constitution frowns on the publication of pornographic materials and urged practitioners to draw a fine line between freedom and responsibility.
