Some 70 media practitioners in the Eastern Region are being schooled on best practices and corporate social responsibilities in the mining industry.
The two-day training aims at equipping journalists and other media practitioners with adequate understanding of the legal, social and other attributes of mining.
The training is part of several objectives to clear misconceptions on mining as seen in some quarters as a negative venture, due to its sometimes devastating effects on the environment. It will also seek to bring to bear some constraints sections of the law pose in the implementation of some provisions in the 1992 constitution, and need to have some changes.
The External Communications Manager of Newmont Akyem Project, Marfo Oduro Kwarteng said at the opening that the training forms part of Newmont’s quest to become the gold company of choice as it seeks to operate according to the best industry practice and in a socially responsible manner.
He said Newmont will ensure that its activities do not only benefit its operational communities but the country as a whole.
The event is being sponsored by Newmont Ghana and is to serve as a platform to enable the media who are at the forefront in giving out information to the public to better understand the mining industry. These organizers and their stakeholders believe, will enable media practitioners to deliver factual, accurate and well resourced information to the general public.
