The Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Oquaye has challenged the four lawyers who accused the judiciary of corruption to substantiate their claims.According to him, the lawyers should be made to distinguish between the corrupt judges and magistrates and the not corrupt ones. The four lawyers - Dr. Raymond Atuguba, David Annan, Mr Larry Bimi and Dr Abraham Amaliba were blacklisted by the Judges and Magistrates’ Association for asserting that corruption in the judiciary was not a myth but a reality. They made the comments at a round-table discussion on the Judiciary and Ghana’s justice system in Accra, organized by the National Commission for Civic Education as part of its annual constitution week. The Judges and Magistrates have indicated that until the four lawyers provide proof beyond doubt that Judges and Magistrates are indeed corrupt, they will boycott cases they provide counsel.Dr. Raymond Atuguba last week had his client's case refused hearing by the Supreme Court. His client, Sumaila Bielbiel, is challenging the nationality of the MP for Bawku Central, Adamu Dramani Sakande.Prof. Mike Oquaye while speaking on Citi FM, said the allegations by the four lawyers had drawn the integrity of judges in the country into the mud.He said there was the need for a mechanism to punish lawyers or any group of persons who make such unfounded allegations against the judiciary. The Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament noted that he supports the decision by the judges and magistrates to blacklist the lawyers until they provide proof.Meanwhile, a legal practitioner and a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) legal team, Chris Ackumey has stated emphatically that he has strong evidence of corruption in the country's judiciary. He stated on Joy FM's Newsfile on Saturday, that he has evidence to prove that a judge in 2008 took a bribe of GHS500, which influenced the outcome of a case in which he was counsel.Mr. Ackumey has therefore maintained that if he is invited to prove his case by the General Legal Council, he will not hesitate to provide detailed evidence on the allegation.Story by: Adwoa Gyasiwaa/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
