The President, J.E.A Mills has assured Ghanaian workers that the Single Spine Salary Pay Structure is high on the agenda of his government and will implemented at the appropriate time.He said the stalemate in the implementation of the scheme was due to his government’s commitment to ensuring that concerns of all stakeholders are taken into consideration to avert implementation challenges.Speaking at this year’s May Day parade at the Independence Square in Accra, the president said his government had provided the Fair Wages Commission with adequate resources to do its work in connection with the SSSPS.The president said he had also asked for a review of the Pension Law as he will “not hesitate to review legislation or agreements to ensure that Ghanaians are not shortchanged.”According to him, the Economic Partnership Agreement was also being reviewed by the government “and (we) will seek advice and inputs from the key players in industry especially employers and unions in order to arrive at a decision.This was in response to an appeal by the General Secretary of the Ghana Trades Unions Congress, Mr. Kofi Asamoah that EPAs should be looked at as they had serious negative implications for the working people in the country.Creation of employmentPresident Mills reiterated his government’s commitment to creating jobs for the people because of its belief that Ghanaians are entitled to decent living and well-paid jobs.“Our government intends to promote and create employment opportunities in all the sectors of the economy.”He gave the assurance the National Youth Employment Programme, the Youth in Agriculture Programme among others will be re-engineered and enhanced to provide more jobs for the people.Other laudable policies initiated by the previous government such as the capitation grant, the school feeding programme, and the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty programmes will be continued and expanded.“Government has also approved a sum of GH¢7.5 million for the continuation of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty programme,” he emphasized.President Mills appealed to junior doctors in the country to bear with government as efforts were being made to solve their protracted salary problems.“I very much understand their problems,” he said, “because for three years nothing has been done about their salaries.”He said although the steps being taken by his government may not be adequate, they were a demonstration of the government’s commitment to finding lasting solutions to the salary problems of junior doctors in the country.The president also appealed to the reconstituted boards of state institutions to look into wrongful dismissal of some workers.“I would want to make a special appeal to the reconstituted boards to take a look into these wrongful dismissals and to do justice to the people affected in accordance with our laws,” he said.Story by Malik Abass Daabu/Myjoyonline.com
