Professor John Evans Atta-MiIls, the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has assured the teeming followers of the party and Ghanaians in general that if voted into power, his government will not discriminate against any region or ethnic group in the sharing of the national cake.
The NDC leader, who is on a tour of some selected constituencies across the country has so far used the tour to unveil his major policy direction if given the mandate to lead the country come, December 7, 2008.
He has severally commented on what his government will do in the specific areas of the economy including education, health, job creation and agriculture to the admiration of the large crowds which have turned out to listen to his vision for Ghana. According to The New National Democrat correspondents accompanying the NDC flag bearer on the tour, Atta-Mills made it clear to the people that he would review the petroleum pricing policy as it pertains now under the NPP government. He views the NPP government policy on petroleum pricing as amounting to economic murder of the poor and the working classes of the land.
He reiterated that the NPP does not care a hoot about their lives because they only came to loot the coffers. Commenting further on what his NDC government will do about petroleum prices if it won political power come December, he stated that the tax element is too much. "We will review the taxes and do away with most of them so as to make petroleum products affordable to Ghanaians. The constant review of prices of the petroleum products as being done by the NPP government will cease. We have better qualified experts on energy to deal with the issue and bring smiles back to the tired and gloomy faces of Ghanaians" he confidently assured.
On education, Atta-Mills made it clear that the GETFUND established by the NDC government before it lost power will be properly managed and applied to specific targets for which it was set up. The blatant abuse of the GETFUND and its attendant misappropriation and misapplication will be brought to an end if the NDC reclaims power in December, he noted.
Instead of selected schools benefiting from the school feeding programme, the NDC leader maintained that his party's policy will be to extend it to every school in the country and to clothe every child of school going age for free. His position on the free and compulsory basic education is that no child either from high or low background must be discriminated against. They deserve free education materials that will make their education complete and not the self-serving approach by the NPP which has hidden costs and therefore not yielding the desired results of getting every child into the classroom.
In this connection, Prof. Mills, when addressing the students and authorities of the University for Development Studies CUDS), assured them of his commitment to give it a facelift and redirect its focus to address the needs of society, restore hope to both the students, the academic and non-academic staff. "The NDC government, which set up the University, had a vision for establishing the UDS and I pledge to ensure that this vision is realized under my presidency".
Delving into his policy on agriculture, Atta-Mills said the country needs a total agrarian revolution to stand on its feet. The days of paying lip service to agriculture and exposing the poor farmer to high cost of inputs will give way to a government-led scheme of providing the needed resources to small and medium scale farmers to boost agricultural production. A more scientific-based approach will be the cornerstone of his government in overhauling the agricultural sector.
Explaining further the vital role of agriculture in the cog of economic development of the country, the NDC leader said the party's agricultural policy recognizes the importance of energy if the desired impact is to be made. In order to realize the sound policies that his NDC government wants to implement if it won power, he specifically assured the chiefs and people of the three northern regions of his vision to build windmills to generate electricity for irrigating farmlands.
Making specific references to the lavish lifestyles of NPP government functionaries and their recent presidential primaries, Atta¬-Mills challenged them to tell Ghanaians how they came by such huge sources of funds in just their seven years in political office. "These were men we all know in this country before they took political office in 2001. Where from the sudden affluence? Where did they get all these money from?” he queried the teeming crowd which had turned out to catch a glimpse of him and listen to his vision.
The NDC leader, buoyed by the massive crowd which had been greeting his arrival and his speeches wherever he went is in no doubt of electoral victory come December 7, 2008. He is now on his way to the Volta Region.
