President John Evans Atta Mills says he had no hand in the payment of GHS58 million judgement debt to businessman and National Democratic Congress guru, Alfred Agbesi Woyome, as his opponents would want Ghanaians to believe.
He said he cannot be so irresponsible to direct his Finance Minister to pay such a whopping amount of money to one person while the masses suffer due to inadequate infrastructure and basic amenities.
“...when I know the plight of our people, when I know our people are crying for water, the basic necessities of life, how can I be so criminally-minded, so irresponsible to say give 58 million to one person.”
The President was speaking during an interaction with editors at the Castle, Osu, Monday.
According to him, it is not the practice for him as president to order his finance minister to make any payment.
Therefore, he said, the minister of finance did not need his permission to pay any judgment debt, especially when it had been captured in the budget.
“I know it is criminal, irresponsible, the height of naivety for a president to call his minister of finance and say pay this man this…"
President Mills also accused the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) of unfairly blaming him for the act just so to score cheap political points.
“You may want to nail Atta Mills to the cross, but if you want to do so, please find the right reasons...” he counseled.
