A leading member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kofi Osei-Ameyaw says the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) is doing the erstwhile Kufuor administration no favour by implementing the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS). President Mills on Tuesday appealed to striking doctors who are demanding swift migration onto the new pay structure to go back to work, saying his government could have called off the implementation of the SSSS but rather kept faith by implementing it. He said the past government – which instituted the SSSS - left no money for its implementation. However, the former Member of Parliament for the Asuogyaman Constituency said President Mills had no choice but to execute the pay structure because it was commissioned to correct anomalies in the salaries of public sector workers and that the anomalies if not corrected would have caused the Mills government more strike actions than it was now experiencing. Mr Osei-Ameyaw, speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem Wednesday, said the NPP would have implemented the pay policy its flagbearer Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo had won the 2008 elections. But now that that is not the case, he pointed out that it is the duty of President Mills and his government to ensure there is fair, reasonable and equitable salaries for workers instead of laying the blame on his predecessor. He urged the President to employ a competent team that is capable of engaging all groups at the negotiating table to address the inequalities in the system and resolve problems confronting the migration of workers onto the new pay structure. A co-panelist on the show, Ahmed Ibrahim, MP for Tain accused the NPP of playing mischief with the issues, saying that if Mills had not commented on the SSSS, the opposition would have taken him to task to score cheap political points.
