Government has introduced new reforms for district assemblies in the country to ensure increased participation of women in the local governance system.Local Government and Rural Development Minister Joseph Yileh Chireh said the move has become necessary because government is worried about the low numbers of women’s involvement in tomorrow’s nationwide district level elections. However, he was confident the level of interest shown in the exercise would produce the right caliber of people to help deepen the decentralization process.Elton John Brobbey reports that with less than 24 hours to go for the voting, aspirants in the Ashanti Region are still campaigning. They are moving from house to house to try and woo voters to support their bid.Mr Yieleh Chireh said the government intends to appoint as many women as possible to the assemblies to foster women participation in national politics. The president has been mandated to appoint 30 per cent of members of the assemblies, and the Local Government Minister said a large number of this will be women.Source: Joy News/Ghana
