Many rivers and streams in mining areas in Ghana are being heavily polluted because some mining companies have adopted bad environmental practices.According to a research conducted by the NGO, Wassa Association of Communities Affected by Mining, WACAM said the pollutions have reached levels that pose serious threat to human and aquatic life.Executive director of WACAM, Mr Daniel Owusu Koranteng, tells Joy News many of the water bodies in Ghana’s mining areas have immense deposits of heavily metals which are residues of cyanide spillage.Mr Koranteng blames the situation on weak environmental standards and regulations.“There is no law so when companies spill out cyanide they out to say it was accidental,” he said.Source: Joy News/Myjoyonline.com
