The Minority in Parliament is asking President John Mahama to back his conciliatory words with action. The president at his state of the nation address on Friday to dissolve the fifth Parliament of the fourth Republic, urged the members to eschew their partisan tendencies and be partners for development. In what could be described as the shortest state of the nation address delivered by any President, John Mahama paid solemn tribute to his predecessor John Mills, who died on July 24, 2012. He said whilst the death of Mills was heart breaking, it also showed a nation ready to unite in adversity. He touted the macro economic achievements, strides made in education, health delivery and other pro-poor interventions he said the government has successfully executed. But the Minority believes the President must walk the talk, especially on the issue of partisanship. Speaking to Joy News’ Parliamentary correspondent, Elton John Brobbey, some members of the minority said the president cannot be talking about partnerships in Parliament when the majority always takes entrenched position on issues. They also cite the likely selection of the PNC member of Parliament Alhassan Azong as the second Deputy Speaker instead of the NPP MP Joe Ghartey. The Minority also criticized the President for not including major critical issues in the country such as the judgement debt saga in his state of the nation address. Meanwhile, the majority applauded the president for the brevity of his address.
