The Minority in Parliament has blocked the laying of a legislative instrument from the Trade and Industry Ministry aimed at regulating the pricing of cement products in Ghana.
Weeks ago, Trade Minister KT Hammond directed cement manufacturers to reverse their decision to hike prices.
This decision was rejected by the manufacturers and the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI).
Today, the Minister's effort to gain legal backing is also facing fierce opposition in Parliament.
The NDC MPs are demanding that the legislative instrument (LI) go through pre-laying procedures before being formally laid on the floor.
The Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, argues that the NDC’s insistence on pre-laying every single L.I. is not in line with the constitution.
"It adds up to nothing. In any event, any matter arising there too can still be resolved and when the document is properly before the committee. The Committee will be seized with jurisdiction only if we lay it and a referral made," he said on the floor.
