The Minority National Democratic Congress (NDC) has said Parliament is frustrating its efforts to get the Bank of Ghana to tell Ghanaians how much the re-denomination of the cedi is costing the state. The Minority Spokesman on Communications and MP for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu filed an urgent question asking the Governor of the Central Bank to make a full disclosure of cost of the
exercise.According to him, the Speaker has instead admitted the question as an ordinary one which could take a year to answer. One week after filing the urgent question, four members of the minority, including Deputy Minority Leader, Mr Edward Doe Adjaho and Mr. Iddrisu filed a motion asking the House to compel the Governor and the Minister for Finance to tell Ghanaians how much of their money is being used in the re¬denomination exercise. The redenomination exercise takes off July 1.But Haruna Iddrisu said there are no indications from the leadership as to whether that motion will be taken any time soon. He told Joy News the minority is disappointed but will not abandon its quest to ensure that government makes a full disclosure and conduct the exercise transparently too.“If the government do not have anything to hide… they must be ready to account to the people of Ghana and Parliament of Ghana. The governor and minister of finance must make full disclosures…we need to know so that we then can evaluate the rationale,” he said.Meanwhile, the MP for Suame and Majority Chief Whip Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu has dismissed the Minority's claims.Speaking to Joy News, he said the Minority failed to go through the due process in tabling both the motion and the urgent question. He disclosed that the Finance Minister, Mr Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu would be in the House next week to respond to the concerns.
