The General Secretary of the Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG), Richard Kofi Jordan, has announced that all mortuary workers across the country will embark on an indefinite strike starting on Thursday, November 28.

The association's declaration follows employers' failure to fulfill some promises, including providing adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), settling unpaid salary arrears, and meeting commitments regarding bonuses and financial clearance for new staff.

Mr Kofi Jordan urged his colleagues to halt their services at morgues across the country.

“Mortuaries are closed across the country. We will continue to close the whole day. We are going to reject all those who die today. We are also not going to release bodies to families. We are doing this until further notice,” he announced.

According to him, the government refused to address their long-standing grievances after two months of negotiations.

“In September, when we engaged the government, they asked for time. We said okay. We gave them two weeks, we gave them October 9, so they know,” he revealed.

He stressed that the strike would continue for the foreseeable future and highlighted additional concerns that needed urgent attention.

“Therefore, we are asking for an additional 500 workers to be added to the already existing staff so we can work and serve the Ghanaian people,” he concluded.

This is not the first time mortuary workers have threatened a strike. In previous cases, the strike never happened or was called off just after starting.
