The mother of an 11-year-old hermaphrodite is appealing for help to enable her undergo treatment.
Rukaya Awudu has both male and female sex organs. She is often ridiculed for the condition and taunts from her friends have forced her away from school.
Her father has allegedly abandoned her, leaving her mother to single-handedly cater for her and her other siblings.
The single-mother said she cannot bear the agony of watching her daughter weep daily for not being able to attend school.
Consultant Pediatrics Surgeon at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital Dr. William Asiedu-Mensah says Rukaya needs 5,000 Ghana Cedis to start treatment.
He said some investigations which included some technical procedures needed to be conducted to be able to decide which sex she is likely to be before any surgical operation can be undertaken.
