The mother of a 40-year-old amputee gunned down by a joint military patrol team is demanding authorities take action against officers involved, and compensate the family for the upkeep of the deceased child.
Kwaku Oppong was allegedly fleeing from police, having kidnapped a woman, and refused all attempts to stop his vehicle despite hitting one person and knocking down a motorbike in his bid to escape.
All this while, the police claim, the kidnapped lady was screaming for help.
The police say they traced Oppong to his house and attempted to arrest him. They claim he resisted arrest and attempted to stab them.
However, Luv FM’s Erastus Asare Donkor reports that the family of the deceased are refuting the account given by the police.
The brother of the deceased, who witnessed the incident claims the police forced him into the house and demanded he show them where his brother was hiding. He further reports that the police attempted to handcuff Oppong after they dragged him out from under a bed.
When they realized he was an amputee, he says, the officers shot Oppong in the chest.
Oppong’s mother is therefore demanding sanctions against the officers as well as compensation for the death of her son.
She told Erastus that the police brutalized her; punching and kicking her until she became dizzy.
She questioned the actions of the police officers and the soldier, stressing if someone commits a crime, the person should be questioned and not killed.
How can five policemen and a soldier struggle with a physically challenged man? She lamented.
She informed Erastus that her son had a child and that she is demanding compensation from the police service, as the child has become her responsibility.
Listen to the mother below:
Public Relations Officer of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, ASP Mohammed Tanko says the shooting was in self-defense, as Oppong attempted to stab the officers with a knife.
The law allows police officers to resort to the use of fire-arms in such situations.
