The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has warned traders who have been allocated stalls at the Abinkyi Market to move in or lose the facility.
The assembly will later this month begin the second phase of relocating traders at the Race Course Market to make way for the proposed Sun City Project.
Clement Kigeri, spokesperson for the Metro Chief Executive, says the assembly expects a maximum utilisation of the new market instead of people selling at unauthorized places.
The second phase of the relocation exercise takes place between October 12 and 14.
Construction works will immediately resume on the Sun City Kumasi Project, initiated by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
Officials say the 7,000-capacity Abinkyi Market is ready for occupation, though a place of convenience and a fence wall, among other structures, are yet to be completed.
The assembly has so far received 1,700 applications more than the official capacity.
Mr. Kigeri says the assembly has no option but to compel the traders to occupy the market without compromise.
“We expect the remaining traders at the Race Course to leave before 12th October… It must be stated that all traders who have acquired stores or sheds at Abinkyi Market are to start selling in them, failure of which will leave the assembly with no option than to re-allocate such places to those who are prepared to do business at the facility.”
A task force of police and city guards will soon be set up to enforce ejection of traders at the Race Course.
Thomas Kwabena Braimah, Managing Director of T&K Enterprise, which is constructing the Abinkyi Market says work is behind schedule because of unfavourable weather.
