The Member of Parliament (MP) for Okaikoi North, Elizabeth Sackey  is blaming the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) for the collapse of the seven-storey uncompleted hotel building at Nii Boi Town in Accra.

According to her, the AMA, whose responsibility it is to ensure that the structure is built to the required specification, has failed in its duties.

She, therefore, requested that the building inspector at the AMA responsible for overseeing the contruction of the building be made to explain the circumstances under which the building collapsed.

The MP was speaking to Joy News' Beatrice Adu, Thursday, when she visited the scene of the tragedy to assess the situation.

Elizabeth Sackey pointed out that even though infrastructural development is necessary, proper procedures should be adhered to when putting up structures in the city.

Meanwhile, earth-moving equipment are busy digging deep into the rubble to rescue people believed to be trapped under the collapsed building.

The building collapsed at dawn, Thursday, trapping an unconfirmed number of people, most of whom are believed to be construction workers.

A team of security personnel and officials from the Red Cross retrieved the body of one man and rescused another.

Government has announced plans to set up a technical committee to investigate the circumstances leading to the collapse.

The Deputy Works and Housing Minister, Samson Ahi, who also visited the site told journalists there is a search for the owner of the building.

According to him, depending on the outcome of the technical committee's investigations,  the owner of the building may be made to face the law.

The Inspector General of Police, Defense Minister and other leading government officials have been there to observe the situation.

Briefing the media, the Greater Accra Regional Fire officer, Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Kwame Kwarteng said firemen are doing all they can to rescue those still trapped under the rubble.
