The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Lower Manya Krobo, Michael Teye Nyaunu, has criticised the government for what he says is its sluggish approach to prosecuting officials of the previous administration accused of corruption.Teye Nyaunu argues that the NDC government rode on the back of promises to jail corrupt officials to win the 2008 polls, but has failed to deliver on that pledge.Attorney-General Betty Mould-Iddrisu has indicated that the government will this year adopt a somewhat fast track approach in investigating and prosecuting former officials against whom corruption allegations have been made.But Mr. Teye Nyaunu tells Joy News the slow pace at which the administration is proceeding cannot be justified.“I know some investigations will take up to 10 years or 15 years but not in political administrations like this. [Emmanuel Agyarko] is the former Chief Executive of the Food and Drugs Board and was [a] parliamentary candidate for the NPP and was the presiding member of the Manya Krobo District Assembly. Together with the District Chief Executive, they have misapplied or misused or misappropriated GH¢20 billion bequeathed to the assembly as we speak now,” he alleged.“If you have come by saying that the people are massively corrupt and for one year, you cannot substantiate it; for one year our party activists have to bow down their heads, they have made a lot of enemies around for calling these people thieves and the rest and for one year we’ve not been able to bring them to book then what are we doing?” he asked.This is not the first time Mr Nyaunu is expressing concern at the pace of the Mills administration.He first lashed out at the government last year and raised questions about the calibre of ministers the President was working with.
