A security expert, Dr. Kwasi Annin has absolved the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI) of any wrong doing in the on-going interrogation of ex-chief of staff, Kwadwo Mpiani.
According to him, the BNI has been “civil and open” in their dealings with Mr. Mpiani.
The BNI questioned the former chief of staff, Tuesday, for nearly 12 hours on what government sources say was on a “wide range of issues.”
Counsel to the beleaguered chief, Yooni Kolendi, told Joy News the rule of law was flagrantly violated as they were not allowed to sit-in when Mr. Mpiani was being interrogated.
But Dr. Anning told Joy News’ Evans Mensah on Wednesday, no fatal injury has been done by excluding the three-member counsel from the interrogation.
He explained, the BNI has every mandate to invite any official for a chat, which could be in different sessions.
Dr. Anning said for the first introductory conversation there is no need for a counsel, as the main objective is to identify the grey areas which could further be subject to investigation and prosecution.
But for subsequent sessions or interrogation, the security expert said the invitee in this case, Mr Mpiani, should be allowed access to his counsel.
He lamented the increasing politicization of the event and chided the ex-ministers for unduly raising the political tension in the country.
The ex-ministers together with an army of party supporters besieged the BNI headquarters demanding to see the ex chief of staff but was prevented by armed police personnel.
“There was no basis for the action by the NPP,” he said adding the BNI should be allowed to do its duties.
