Ghana’s parliamentary proceedings can now be accessed live by anyone in any part of the world without geographic limitation.
This is possible through an audioconference facility from Forum Network, in collaboration with MTN and the Public Affair Directorate of Parliament to provide worldwide broadcast of the parliamentary proceedings.
A statement from Forum Network said “individuals, educational institutions, corporate organisations and the general public can now listen to live parliamentary debates via any mobile telecom network by just dialing 0242427777 at normal call rates and long distance charges.”
It said MTN subscribers could however dial MTN short code 30033 at 4Gp per minute and listen to parliamentary proceedings, which normally commences at 10:30am from Tuesday to Friday.
The statement said by the application of the audioconferencing technology, the ordinary Ghanaian now had the opportunity to monitor parliamentary debates and make informed decisions based on facts and figures as presented in Parliament.
“That aside, the electorates now have the opportunity to evaluate the performance and effectiveness of their representatives in Parliament through contributions to debates on the floor of the house,” it said.
The statement said Forum Network and MTN were happy to introduce the service as a way of contributing to good governance, deepening democracy and enriching the lives of Ghanaians, adding that further arrangements were ongoing for discounted call rates for MTN subscribers.
“This initiative makes Ghana’s Parliament the first Parliament in the world to subscribe to such a technological facility that makes all live debates and proceedings in the house globally accessible,” the statement said.
