MTN Ghana Foundation has presented the second chunk of GHC50,000 to five Polytechnic students who won the MTN’s 10millionth Merit Award Essay Competition for tertiary level students to mark its 10million subscribers milestone. Each of the five students, drawn from Ho, Wa, Koforidua, Bolga and Sunyani Polytechnics, took home GHC10,000 scholarship for the brilliant essays they wrote on the topic “Discuss How Ghana Can Take Advantage of ICT and Data Usage for its Development.” Prior to these five, MTN had given five more students drawn from five universities similar packages for emerging successful in a similar competition for university students. Chief Executive of MTN Ghana, Michael Ikpoki noted the MTN Foundation recognizes the importance of polytechnic education and its contribution to the growth of industries and of national development. “For us at MTN we are happy to say that we work with highly skilled personnel some of whom have been trained in the polytechnics and we are proud to say that they are contributing immensely to the attainment of the corporate vision,” he said. He therefore encouraged the winners to make good use of the support from MTN Ghana Foundation and leap into the world of possibilities through determination, adding that the parents also have a responsibility to invest the savings they would make because of MTN’s support, in profitable ventures for the children. Mr. Ikpoki also urged the students to “take full advantage of the opportunities telecoms and technology brings to encourage the use of ICT to broaden your horizon and not limit yourself to the few available resources in your school.” Executive Director of MTN Ghana Foundation, Mrs. Cynthia Lumor said the Foundation is pleased to have been able to support 10 students at the high level to continue with their education. “As a socially responsible organization, we are happy to have honored our promise to our subscribers and Ghana as a whole,” she said. She said MTN feels good about enriching the lives of 10 students currently studying in the universities and polytechnics of Ghana. Senior Manager of MTN Ghana Foundation, Robert Kuzoe told Adom News the foundation has a standing scholarship scheme which has provided support for more than 1,000 Ghanaians students from basic to tertiary levels over the years, adding that currently there are 134 beneficiaries on the scheme.
