The Mobile Telecommunications Network (MTN), Ghana on Wednesday denied media reports alleging that it was involved in the activities of some political parties. “MTN is politically neutral and has no wish to be drawn into politics of Ghana,” Ms. Mawuena Dumor, Corporate Service Executive of MTN Ghana said at a news conference in Accra.
She mentioned such reports to include the use of MTN scratch card vouchers to advertise Nana Akufo-Addo, presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, a donation to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the use of text messages and MTN vehicles to support activities of the NDC. Touching on the scratch card issue, Ms Dumor said, investigations by the company could not trace persons who purchase stocks of vouchers, but it was clear that whoever bought them peeled off the pin and serial numbers and reprinted them for the intended purpose.
She said, the company had also not traced the venue for the reprinting. The Corporate Executive said it was also untrue that MTN donated money to the NDC in Tamale. She said, two conflicting reports stated that she (Mawuena) made the presentation to the NDC in Tamale on December 13, in one report and on December 20 in another. “This is never true because I lost my mother on December 13 and was with my family in Accra neither is the December 20 story too, because I was then in Accra to observe her one- week memorial service”.
On the text messaging to some MTN subscribers to vote for a particular candidate, Ms Dumor stressed, that MTN respected the privacy of its customers and would therefore not give out their numbers to any political party. “As to how they got the numbers, we cannot tell. The political parties would have to come out to answer themselves”, she stated.
Ms Dumor further explained that not all vehicles with an MTN logo or sticker belonged to the company, saying that its contractors and other customers used their stickers to express their loyalty. “When such individuals as Ghanaian citizens express their rights by engaging in political party activities, this should not be attributed to MTN.
The Corporate Executive reaffirmed MTN’s commitment to its core business of providing telecommunication to meet the needs of clients and services in a neutral manner.
