Mobile operator MTN says it is in discussions with the National Communications Authority to address its issues with Expresso.
The mobile telecommunications giant blocked calls coming to their network from the CDMA operator, Expresso beginning November 1, 2014.
MTN last week notified its subscribers of the decision through text message indicating it was due to circumstances beyond its control.
“Due to uncontrollable circumstances, MTN customers cannot receive calls from Kasapa [Expresso] from Nov. 1. You can, however, call Kasapa customers. Sorry for the inconvenience.”
The action was influenced by the inability of Expresso to settle debts owed MTN in termination fees, Joy Business gathered.
Chief Executive of MTN Ghana Serame Taukobong in an interview with Joy Business’ George Wiafe blamed Expresso for reneging on its commitments.
“We do have certain agreements and commitments that must be made but unfortunately Kasapa (Expresso) has not been able to make those commitments, and as for the NCA guidelines, this is the sanction that we had to take.”
He further explained: “It is not a sudden action, we have been trying to work on this for over a year but unfortunately it has not been resolved so we have had to go and apply the NCA sanctions.”
He said they are hoping to conclude discussions with the regulator soon to lift the ban.
Meanwhile, Expresso has apologised to its subscribers for the development.
“We apologize for your inability to make calls to some networks due to tech challenges. Management is working to resolve it ASAP. Sorry for the inconvenience."
MTN has over 13 million subscribers on its network while Expresso, while has about 124,000 subscribers, according to August figures from the National Communication Authority (NCA).
