Mr. Ernest Caesar Asiedu, Communication Director of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, has advised Ghanaians to change their lackadaisical attitude towards the management of waste.
He stressed that if people changed their attitude towards sanitation, waste managers and district assemblies could ensure cleanliness in the country in a faster and efficient manner.
Mr. Asiedu was addressing a gathering of Muslims at an Islamic Community public education on sanitation at the Sunyani Central Mosque at the weekend.
The one-day programme was organised by Zoomlion Ghana Limited in collaboration with Sheikh Nuamah Associates under the theme: “Clean Environment: A Must for Life”.
It was attended by about 70 people including Muslim youth activists, tribal heads and women leaders.
Mr. Asiedu emphasized that a clean environment prevented the outbreak of diseases such as malaria and typhoid fever and urged Muslim elders to take advantage of the great respect they commanded in their communities to educate their people sanitation.
Mr. Sheikh Ishaak Nuamah, an educationist and social commentator, announced that the programme was the third in the series with the first and second ones held in Accra and Takoradi.
Mr. Ernest Ohene, Sunyani Municipal Deputy Environmental Officer, said his outfit was not relenting in efforts at ensuring that food vendors in the municipality complied with sanitation laws including medical laboratory checks to guarantee their continued for cooking for the public.
He urged the organizers of the programme not to let it be a “one-day wonder”.
Mr. Kwaku Poku Gyimah, Brong-Ahafo Deputy Regional Co-ordinating Director, said waste management was a shared responsibility and urged people in the municipality to join hands with agents contracted to help keep the municipality clean.
Nana Opoku Takyi Abeam, Gyantoahene of Sunyani Traditional Council who represented Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri, Omanhene, suggested to Zoomlion to reduce cost of its dust-bin to enable more residents procure them.
He complained that the high cost of the dust-bin at public places was the cause of the inability of people to purchase one and appealed to the management of the waste management company “to do something about it to enable many people obtain them”.
Mr. Yusif Imoro, Brong-Ahafo Regional Manager of Islamic Education Unit, presided over the function.
