An aide to Nana Akufo-Addo, Mustapha Hamid has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of planning to use violence to win the 2012 elections.
Mr. Hamid who was a co-panelist on Joy FM's News File said the New patriotic Party (NPP) has information that the NDC is laying the grounds to visit violence on the opposition in order to retain power.
Mr. Hamid quotes a 16th August 2010, Daily Graphic reportage titled NDC sets up a fund for youth activities as evidence to this plan explaining that the NDC had established the fund to support members who work hard to ensure that the party hangs on to power by hook or crook.
He said the NDC's intentions are clear and are the underlying reasons why Nana Akufo-Addo has been admonishing party members to be resolute in the face of intimidation.
He said “Nana Addo is saying look, when you turn your back and flee, the marauding hordes of NDC supporters will still come after you with the cutlasses and cutlass you. It is better to stand toe to toe with them and let you be cutlassed rather than to run for cover like a woman, so we are not going to run we are going to defend the ballot box”.
But his colleague on the other side, Minister for Communication, Haruna Iddrisu flatly denied the accusation explaining that when he was leaving office as national youth organiser of the NDC, he proposed that the fund is created to cater for the numerous party members who go out of their way to help the party machinery implement its projects.
He said the motive behind the creation of the fund was not for people who indulge in political violence but for those who genuinely get injured whiles working for the party.
He however recounted various violent incidents perpetrated by supporters of the NPP which have not been resolved. He pointed accusing fingers at Mustapha Hamid for freeing an individual who was arrested for shooting, an accusation Mustapha Hamid denies
