The English Premier League and Spanish La Liga have been the stages for some of Africa’s best footballers.
This week’s Joy Sports Mythical Match-up features eleven of the best African players to have featured in the English Premier League against their counterparts from Spain’s La Liga.
Although he doesn’t make our squad for Africa’s Premier League team, Peter Ndlovu deserves a mention for being the first African to play in England’s new top-flight format (which replaced the old First Division) when he signed for Coventry in 1991. He blazed the trail for later superstars who took the league by storm.
From Lucas Radebe to John Mikel Obi and Micheal Essien, African players have consistently taken the Premier League by storm and attained the status of cult heroes and legends.
Eleven of the best Premier League players of the past cannot be without the talismanic Dedier Drogba. The Ivorian struggled, initially, after his £24 million move from Bordeaux but left Stamford Bridge a legend, and the Premier League’s greatest African player.
Like the Premier League, La Liga has witnessed action from some of the continent’s most iconic players, but none more iconic than former Barca marksman Samuel Eto’o. The Indomitable Lion was Barcelona’s target man, and the host of titles won were, to a massive extent, thanks to the crucial goals he scored—152 to be exact.
One of the key figures in Deportivo La Coruna’s 1999-2000 La Liga winning season was Cameroon goalkeeper Jacques Songo’o.
Songo’o also won the prestigious Zamora Trophy, the award given to the best keeper in the league.
Finidi George, Geremi Njitap and Seydou Keita are among other top Africans stars to make the La Liga team for this classic Mythical Match Up.
Who wins this battle of Africa’s finest from the world’s two top football leagues?
The choice is yours.
