The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) to reverse its directive to Achimota School asking it to admit 2 Rastafarian students.
Speaking at a press briefing today March 22, the President of NAGRAT, Mr Angel Carbonu stated that the directive from GES to Achimota School is a threat to conformity and discipline in schools.
"We are calling on the Ghana Education Service to redirect the Headmistress and the staff of Achimota Senior High School (SHS) to ensure that the rules and regulations of Achimota SHS and indeed any other Senior High School is abided by by every student.
This comes after the Achimota Senior High School denied 2 Rastafarian students admission to the school on account of their dreadlocked hair.
Mr Carbonou emphasized that the school environment is a learning environment and not one for making fashion or religious statements.
“The school is not a fashion environment. The school is not an environment to exhibit one's beliefs. The school is an environment for training, and conformity is part of training and we expect every student to abide by the rules of the school,” he said.
Mr Carbonu, also challenged anyone who disagrees with the status quo, to proceed to court, adding "that when the court issue comes up, the Union will attach itself to the case because they are an interested party."
“That court case will not be limited into the wearing of Rasta, it will be expanded into the establishment of rules and regulation of our schools," he added.
He argued that "if the Court decides that everybody can do whatever he or she likes, you’ll all be our guests as teachers. We will also develop ways and means of ensuring that we have proper chaotic school environment."
