New Patriotic Party flagbearer Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has maintained Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as his running mate for the 2012 elections. Joy News' Seth Kwame Boateng who reported the announcement from the NPP headquaters in Accra said Nana Addo made a 'strong case' for his decision to retain Dr. Bawumia during a meeting with the National Executive Committee (NEC). He said the executives had no objection to the decision and rose with a unanimous endorsement. The occasion also coincides with the birthday anniversary of the flagbearer. Though there were pockets of resistance against his candidature, Dr. Bawumia was tipped to be retained. The former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana and AFDB Country Representative of Zimbabwe returned to Ghana last Tuesday to push for the NPP 2012 Vice Presidential slot. Following Bawumia's retention, an aid to the NPP flagbearer, Mustapha Hamid, told Joy News he was not surprised at the decision and stressed the need for the party to support the candidates ahead of the December elections. Mr. Kwabena Agyepong, spokesperson to ex-president Kufuor, confirmed that the decision received unanimous acclamation. The party would converge at the Police Park in the Northern Region on Friday for a Moslem thanksgiving and to formally outdoor the running mate.
