Former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings has reported that the National Democratic Party (NDP) was formed in response to waning integrity in governance over the past few years.
She said that rather than serving the interest of the people, politicians have busied themselves with acquiring wealth and attacking anybody who challenged them.
Rawlings was speaking at a ceremony at Ziope and Agortime-Kpetoe to formally introduce Dr. David Yaoga Sunu, a medical practitioner, as the NDP parliamentary candidate for Agortime-Ziope.
She warned that the high level of corruption entrenched in the Ghanaian political system could collapse the country, but that the NDP candidates would govern with the interests of the nation at heart.
She promised constituents at the rally that her party would revive the local kente cloth industry and so that it could become a big source of income for the people.
On a separate note, she criticized the Electoral Commission (EC) for refusing to grant her a place on the ballot as the presidential candidate of the NDP and claimed that in doing so, the Commission had flouted its rules and regulations.
She said the NDP would support its 155 candidates in the race to become members of parliament so that they might contribute to the rebirth of truth in Ghanaian politics.
Dr. Sunu told the assembled crowd that he was born and bred in the constituency and that he therefore understands its problems better than the other candidates.
He promised that if elected, he and the NDP would bring development to local women on par with the development that characterized the era of the 31st December Women’s Movement
He criticized many of today’s politicians who seem to disappear from their communities after elections only to resurface during the next election season and try to win over voters with platitudes.
