The Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu says the National Cathedral project will go down in the country’s political history as the biggest presidential scandal.

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said the government has been disingenuous with the project.

According to him, a special probe is needed to clarify issues surrounding the project.

“This is why we are pushing for a bi-partisan committee probe into this whole National Cathedral rot, which is emerging as the biggest presidential scandal. It is the most putrefying presidential heist in the entire history of the fourth republic.”

“And we think that we must have a special probe to really delve into all the matters because anytime the government makes claims, every angle of it is a breach”, Mr. Ablakwa said on Tuesday, June 21.

The Ranking Member on Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee has been releasing regular information about the project.

He has earlier said that the National Cathedral project is a private entity contrary to claims that it is state-owned.

Again, he alleged that some members of the Board of Trustees have not been registered as such and have been substituted.

According to him, Bishop Dag Heward-Mills, who is the Presiding Bishop of the Lighthouse Group of Churches, and the former Moderator of the Presbyterian Church, Rev. Prof. Cephas were not added in its incorporation.

Mr. Ablakwa said the press release from the National Cathedral Secretariat issued on Friday, June 17, claiming otherwise, is untrue.

“The two revered clergymen have at all material times been clearly left out, and substituted with the following names: Samuel Antwi and Kingsley Ofosu Ntiamoah.

“One wonders if Bishop Dag Heward-Mills and Rev. Prof. Cephas Omenyo are aware that despite the public misrepresentations, their names have been patently omitted from the list of eminent registered directors?” 

Meanwhile, his colleague MP, Sam George, has asked the churches in the country to distance themselves from the controversial project.

He said their association with the project will do their reputation more harm than good.

“I have tried to be silent on this Cathedral matter, but I honestly believe it is about time the Church distances itself from the blatant theft and robbery going on in the name of GOD,” he said in a Facebook post on Tuesday, June 21.
