National security operatives are investigating an alleged dumping of toxic waste at Essipon near Sekondi. The United State of America-flagged vessel, Spirit River, which dumped the oil-based mud, is still detained at the Sekondi Naval base. EPA officials in Sekondi have been directed to send a detailed report to the Ministry of Environment by close of work today. Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Armed Forces, Colonel Mbawine Attintande tells Joy News the vessel will be released when there is a directive from the EPA. Reports say the waste comes from the Benniboye oilfields in Nigeria’s Benin State and the vessel which was on its way to Trinidad and Tobago, connived with a local waste management company in Takoradi to dump the substance.
