An official of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Mr Samuel Akuamoah, has appealed to the Electoral Commission (EC) to protect its hard won reputation by ensuring it organized its activities in an orderly manner.
Mr Akuamoah, the Director of Public Education of the NCCE, said this after going round some of the polling stations during voting at the on-going District Level Elections in the Central Region last Tuesday.
“Ghanaians believe in the ability of the EC to conduct credible elections but are disappointed about how this election is being handled,” he said.
Mr Akuamoah said the people were disappointed about the EC’s late announcement about conducting the election on regional basis when most of the electorate who registered in their home towns had gone there to vote and were told the elections had been rescheduled.
He urged the electorate to bear with the EC and cooperate to make the election, which had direct bearing on the development of their communities, a success.
Mr Akuamoah appealed to the EC to ensure that the shortcomings detected in the regions where the elections had been held were addressed quickly to avoid their recurrence in the other regions.
He was at Gomoa East where he was told the election could not be held in eight polling stations due to unavailability of ballot papers.
At Gomoa West, he learnt that 20 polling stations could not conduct the election because their ballot papers were not supplied.
At Mfantseman East and West, Mr Eric Abakah Hagan, the Municipal Electoral Officer, said 57 stations in the municipality did not vote because they did not get their election materials.Source: GNA
