The Spokesperson for former President J.A. Kufuor has said that the ruling National Democratic Congress is simply rehashing the same old propagandist lies they perpetrated against the former president.
Mr Frank Agyekum was reacting to a swift response from a Deputy Information Minister to Mr Kufuor’s assertion at the NPP’s congress on Saturday that corruption had almost become incarnate in the NDC government.
Mr Okudzeto Ablakwa listed a litany of cases he said smacked of nepotism and dubious deals under President Kufuor, things he said are completely absent under President Mills’ government.
“We will like to remind President Kufuor that President Mills since becoming President has not had his private residence renovated under suspicious circumstances. Nobody from the President Mills household has suddenly purchased a multi-million dollar hotel, neither has any child been given a multi-million dollar pre-paid meter contract nor another given a juicy jute sack importation contract in the Cocoa sector all under hazy and controversial circumstances,” Mr Ablakwa said in a statement and repeated same on Joy FM’s midday news.
But Mr Agyekum said there was nothing new in the Deputy Minister’s statements but a repetition of the same old, unsubstantiated allegations “that even while in government, they have stuck to the same mantra.”
Responding to Ablakwa’s suggestion that Mr Kufuor’s “private residence [was] renovated under suspicious circumstances,” Frank Agyekum said the former president as the “sitting president of the country [and] was living in his own residence. It was the duty of the state to take care and make sure that the place was secured. So what was suspicious about what the state did at [the residence]?
Mr Agyekum said if the NDC was sincerely looking for people who were critical about the corruption in, and incompetence of, the government, it should look no further than the ruling party’s own founder, former president Jerry John Rawlings.
“What president Kufuor has said is nothing different from what president Rawlings himself has said about his own people. What has Mr Okudzeto said about president [Rawlings’ comments]?
