Several members of the ruling NDC in the Nhyiaeso constituency in Kumasi have defected to the opposition New Patriotic Party.
The members, mostly from Atasomanso Zongo, announced their defection at a rally addressed by the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
About twenty of the defectors were introduced to the gathering and they took turns to shake hands with Nana Akufo-Addo.
Some of the defectors who spoke to Joy News expressed disappointment with the ruling party, following what they termed, failed promises made to them by the NDC based on which they supported it in 2008.
“The NDC based its campaign on hypocrisy and lies, and that brought them into power”, a representative of the group told the gathering.
“Now we have realised how corrupt the NDC is”, another member told Joy News.
Corruption and the payment of judgement debts have become a key message that key figures in the NPP have been harping.
The defectors carried placards boldly announcing their decision. Their declaration sent the large crowd into ecstasy.
The Presidential candidate of the NPP has been touring the stronghold of the party- the Ashanti region- for the past week. He is scheduled to hold rallies at selected constituencies in Kumasi, before taking his tour to the Brong Ahafo region.
Everywhere he went, Nana Addo took time to speak of three key areas he hopes to address; job creation through industrialization, extending free basic education to the Senior High School and healthcare.
But so far, his message of a free Senior High School seems to reign supreme, with both young and old cheering him wherever he goes with the slogan: Free Education.
